Why visit Amersfoort?

  • Amersfoort was founded in the year 1259 and has been very well preserved, with narrow streets, alleys, moats and canals, parts of the original fortifications and 3 remaining citygates.
  • Amersfoort was a city of pilgrimage due to a miraculous statue of the lady Mary. Many churches and convents can still be found dotted around the citycenter.
  • Amersfoort has an abundance of nice squares which invite visitors to sit down and have a drink after exploring what the city has to offer.
  • Amersfoort has a very central location, ideal for daytrips:
15 min. to Utrecht, 35 min. to Amsterdam, 45 minutes to Schiphol airport and 60 min. to Rotterdam or The Hague.
